I’m just about to start my career in sales at SAP Qualtrics (entry-level SDR), but I got an offer for a better role that has lots of travel opportunities and pays 70% more in OTE... smaller/lesser-known company though. I’m just not sure how important the brand is on my resume for career trajectory purposes. Any insight is appreciated!
For your 1st job, don’t worry too much about TC... the brand is important, and the network you gain there.
I agree. For the first job, I focused on brand, network, and opportunity. Worry about TC for your 3rd job.
As a first job your focus needs to be on learning and setting the ground work for your sales career. Take the job at SAP, learn how to properly work a sales cycle, and then once you have some experience and knowledge drive your career forward. If you look at comp first or try to jump from SDR to ISR/ AE too soon you’ll be setting yourself up to have a very rough first year in a closing role.
Respectfully, I disagree with all above comments. Entering a large organisation doesn’t always mean you’ll get a great network and learn how to run a sales cycle. Personally, smaller companies will give you a lot more room to grow and move faster. The brand will only sell you to a certain extent, but what is more compelling is a story of your impact, learning and hard times. I’m sure whatever you choose it will work out, after all, there aren’t many young people looking to learn and I think that will be your biggest ingredient to being successful. All the best :)
