Bay Area vs Seattle

Mar 15 20 Comments

I have a Google offer and am considering moving to the bay. For people who have lived/frequently visited both, which is better and why? How far will TC go in bay vs Seattle? Is there much to do in bay area near mountain view?

Both areas are honestly great with their pros/cons. If you want more sunshine, go to the bay. If you want to live close to everything the region has to offer and not deal with insane traffic, go to Seattle.

No there isn’t much to do. Plenty to do around the entire bay hence needing a car and driving around just like everyone else.

Plenty of things to do, but depends on what you like doing. MTV and areas around it have good bars, many good restaurants ( incl. 10+ Michelin restaurants), nice hikes, beach < 1 hr away, plenty of sunshine, wine, ski, camping spots nearby..

This is how I thought about it recently.

    Bay area:
    1. if you want to be near startups,
    2. if you're single and/or if you've a friend network that your spouse prefers,
    3. If you're around the year sun person
    4. If you don't mind spending 40k/ child on private school.

    Seattle:
    1. If you want to enjoy a better standard of living overall. Low taxes, comparatively cheaper real estate
    2. If you want to be close to nature. Hiking, biking every weekend
    3. If you're okay with 5-6 months of shade/rain with occasional let ups
    4. If you want access to really good public schools for kids.

My family TC is 1M. Young child. Age where we wanted to buy a place and settle down for a few years. We chose WA and here's why.
    1. Know we'll mostly work for big tech companies and every one of them will have great teams that work or allow work from Seattle.
    2. The state tax we save per year is roughly $110k which incidentally is our mortgage+tax on a $2.5M house.
    3. We're outdoorsy. 7 months of hikable weather is great and we enjoy the rest of it working around the house.
    4. School district is one of the best in PNW. No need to spend on private school.
    5. We can use the extra $$ on experiences and travel during rainy months.

  • Are they offering same TC for both bay and Seattle? If not, what's the difference?

I'm currently in Seattle studying and have opted bay area in the upcoming interviews.

I personally like the bay area.. Seattle is just non stop rain. Kind of prevents u from a bunch of outdoor activities and ofcourse the food scene is just awesome.
