Hi everyone! I've received offers from Facebook London for PM position (TC 100k£ > base: 79K£, bonus 10%, equity $80K over 4y) & Spotify Stockholm for Senior PM (TC 857K SEK > base: 825K SEK, no bonus, equity $126K). Role at Spotify is much more aligned with personal expectations + had great fit with the team. Facebook is FANG, so can open the door to many opportunities later on, but reputation has gotten downhill over past couple of years. Any thoughts so as to • life in Sweden v. London (I don't live in either cities atm)? • #spotify v. #facebook ? • Potential future opportunities with one or the other? • Offers: is compensation competitive + can I live well in both locations with this salary? Thanks! YOE: 3 Current TC: 85K€ in Paris #europe #faang
Different currencies- hard to compare the offers. For london if 100k before taxes - it would be around 67k after, so it’s like 5k per month. I would say - average. You won’t have to sleep in a park, but say tesla will be only in your dreams Dunno anything about stockholm though
Great to read, thanks for the insight!
OP, what level did they give you for PM position ?
Facebook, so you can transfer to the US pretty easily after 1 year and make real money
That would be true of Spotify as well from what I've heard
Doubt it since spotify is way smaller so it would be substantially harder to transfer. Also it's in NY which is worse for tech than Bay
Where do you work at Paris ? 🙃
OP, did the recruiter at FB shared stock refresher data with you? You know there are yearly refreshers. Right ?
Yes recruiter did share that this would be an option based on performance
Op, can I DM you for Facebook? Have some queries about the interview.
@uVOJ17 May I DM you? I have some questions for FB London.
Pre: lived in London for 4 months (going for another later this year); have been living in Stockholm for 6 months; and lived in 4 different countries till now (including several cities in France) To put it short here are my opinions: Live in London is way more alive and vibrant, more crowded and more social. Stockholm is way more quite and family friendly, with way less pollution and traffic jams. The most crowded time in Stockholm is less crowded then Piccadilly Circus at 3am. Taxes are higher in Sweden then UK. Considering the complex renting swedish system (1st hand controlled by state and local municipalities) it's hard to day about how much you'd be paying for accommodation. In any case it would be cheaper then in London. In Stockholm food is healthier, but a little more expensive then in London. Public transportation or biking is your way to go in both cities, but Stockholm's one is cheaper (~90€) compared to London's (>~150€). Finally, London is a lot like center Paris (kinda Châtelet les Hales during peak hours) and Stockholm like a raining gloomy Versailles (city, not palace). P.S. If you have any other, more specific, questions, please feel free to ask.
Wow, mate, I’m not op, but this is great piece of advice
Very interesting, thanks for sharing @gangalic. Out of all the places you've lived, what's been your favorite country/city to date? From both a living and/or work perspective? Context: Born and raised in California, been in Dublin, IE past two years. Considering another European city before back to US. My boyfriend's swedish (Stockholm is his hometown) so that's pretty high on the list.
Your Spotify Stockholm salary is effectively higher than your Facebook London salary. Sweden is much nicer and more civilized than London. Spotify work culture is very pleasant I hear - while Facebook's is known to be toxic. Also if you are used to the way the French approach work-life balance, Sweden will be a little more to your liking than London. To be honest London is a capitalist hellhole where life is precarious. People work long hours, have long commutes and small, damp houses, they eat crap because who'd have the time to cook with those long hours and commutes (not to mention that tiny surplus after taxes and rent). And now they won't have an NHS any more to fix the health problems that result from this lifestyle. So yes, Sweden and Spotify the better choice by far.
Are you comparing Sweden to London or Stockholm to London? I'm confused.
Honestly, Stockholm is an amazing place to live with a culture that you might prefer over London atm (London is great too, not a criticism). Also, I think Spotify from an ethical perspective is easier to live with than FB
Good to know! Yes, Brexit shenanigans are definitely on the con side for London. So is data privacy for Facebook... :)
