Which offer would you choose (1) or (2)?

I’m tempted to take Facebook for the type of work and cash.

But I’m Blinded by my love of Google.

Any Facebook contractors out there can weigh in?

(1) 180k TC, Google PgM - Google Cloud, Vendor Support (full time role focused on workforce management, headcount planning, forecasting, flexibility to take on 20% technical projects, SF office)

(2) 240k TC, Facebook Data Engineer - Oculus, Portal
($115/hr, 6 month contract role, intention to extend, confirmed with manager potential to convert to FT, Menlo Park)

Thank you.

  • Unless I read it wrong, Google is full-time and FB is contract for 6 months? I have never seen a more obvious choice! Google of course!

A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.

    • You read correctly. Google PgM (non-technical) over Facebook Data Engineer Contract (technical)?

Cool, I wasn't familiar with that idiom.

PgM can be a challenge role at Google, unless you are really into herding cats and do project management. Very different than a data engineering role, so I would pick based on your job preference, not because of the company.

    • Make sure you know what you’re getting into with a non-tech PgM role. Career path, salary, internal reputation, and future prospects.

The career path is poorly defined and happiness as a PgM is highly dependent on variables outside your control (whether there is a PgMO in place, how much credibility the role has at your company, and what org you roll up to).

I would always go for roles in engineering as a PgM.

I work in Google Cloud and know some PgM. I can tell you as en engineer, you will probably not like it and miss technical work unless you are really into project management.

I would probably go with Facebook if that was my core skillset or the one I want to develop.

  • Yeah these are two completely different things. Pick the one that will give you more experience in the type of work you intend to have a career in. Both are great brands for future employment, but being perceived as having an aimless, unpurposed path may work against you in the future.

  • Is the FB contract W2 with the agency or Corp-to-Corp?
