As title said I'm at 250k TC if I value my options at $0 (otherwise closer to 300k). Looking around in NYC. Noticing that companies, esp tier 2 unicorns, ghost or pull out of interviews once we talk about TC because I'm asking for 280k+, although realistically I'm hoping for 300k+. Is that a reasonable ask for my experience and current comp? Only companies that haven't pulled out are Tier 1 unicorns and FAANG. I'm just worried I'll get through, give comp ask, get lowballed or donwleveled and have wasted all my time. What should I be telling them for TC ask? Will places like Amazon even try and match? #tc #comp #nyc
A reasonable ask would be less than $250k TC. It sounds like you're being overpaid.
Could very well be true. I'm wondering if I should just take the pay cut to go somewhere else. Feels kind of humiliating though to get paid less next year.
I'd be up front about your current comp to recruiters, see what they say. You may be able to stay in that same range, depending on the company. I was in a similar situation a few years ago. Was being overpaid for my YOE because it was a small startup and ended up taking on more responsibility when my seniors quit. I took a small pay decrease in the next role, ended up getting raise less than a year in and being right back where I was. Was worth it for the career growth.
Why NYC?
@jDiW27 why do you want to leave Palantir? It’s not as elite as b4, but still quite decent
I really don't want to stay because of its toxic reputation and poor WLB. Recruiters from FAANG/quant funds like Jane Street started messaging so I figured it was time.
If your goal is best $/hr, I'd suggest FANG. If you just want TC, you could try TS, JS, HRT, or Citadel, but your TC will probably reflect your wlb.
You’d have to get like E5 at FB or get into like Two Sigma/Jane Street.
300k? You must be delusional. Stay where you are. What value will companies find in you with 2 years of experience?!
Exactly, either give it some more time or go somewhere else with a better work/life balance but lower pay.
What you are asking for is doable in Bay Area and Seattle but a little harder to come by in NYC. Still possible though. Do you have to stay in NYC? If so I recommend getting multiple T4 offers from LI, FB, G etc and negotiating.
2.5 years experience and $250k? What is your role? Do you have a top 10 MBA? I can speak for AWS and you will be very hard pressed to come in at more even at L6 (regardless of role... except if you are sales).
I’m also curious how someone manages $250k with only 2.5 years of experience.
No, I'm just a regular engineer. I'm not really sure how I ended up with that much either tbh.
