H1Bs/F1-OPTs really that bad? (Rant alert)
I have done my master’s in the US and I am on H1B right now. Whenever I try to understand this anti-H1B/OPT debate - the math somehow doesnt work out.
Just for an example - I remember all my batchmates on F1 student visa were extremely hard working, never went out to party like their American counterparts (because of loans etc), always curious to learn more, tremendous respect for the professors and the american culture.
Finally after 2 years of tremendous hardwork a lot of my batchmates (really smart people) went to tech companies such as Google, Facebook and a few went to Microsoft, Cisco etc. I think each one of them deserved to be there because they applied to more than 200 companies, got 10 calls and converted those one or two offers. I see this as a win-win because the company gets a dedicated hardworking employee with the right skills and a talent pool to choose from and the employee gets a job that provides him a platform to contribute in his area of interest and in return pay taxes, make the economy of the country stronger, pay for rent, food and travel etc
Now talking about those who came here without master’s. I have work ex of over 4 years in my home country and I could always see that mostly the smartest people on the team were selected to go ‘on-site’ on an H1B. These people had proved their skill over the years for the role and that’s how they get sponsored by the company to go on-site. I see this again a benefit to the tech eco-system in the US. Agreed there is misuse but that is a different problem of tightening the loopholes so I don’t want to mix that here.
So, how’s this considered a negative for a country? Isn’t this a positive? I came here to learn and contribute to the tech capital of the world. A country like Canada has to run the PR program to get skilled workers in their country and boost their economy. Agreed that the competition becomes tougher for a citizen but isn’t that a good thing in terms of innovation, growth and quality of work for a country?
EDIT: I am totally against the H1B abuse. Please share your opinion considering the system is able to scrutinize and control these abuses in the future.

Nope, most people I hangout with aren't secretly bigoted as you imply (unless I'm reading the whole thing wrong).
> And yet enough of us do for it to be a noticeable pattern.
a) stop hanging out with shitty people, no they don't make up the majority as much as the "I'm one of the good ones" circle jerk gets you off. b) stop giving a fuck about what people who make assumptions about you think.
