I'm really happy with my job-- I love my lead, am learning a lot, and I'm fully remote. I truly enjoy every day working.

I'm in a level 3 senior position as a systems integration analyst making 82k with 5 yoe. 10% of my salary is put into my 401k, and I get on call pay of about 10% (but being on call won't always be guaranteed). I live in a fairly high COL area, but not as high as Seattle or NYC.

I'm sure I could make more elsewhere but I'm not a software engineer which I know most of the audience here is. What do you think?

If you're genuinely happy, you're probably doing better than 95% of Blind.

  • If you’re happy it’s because you either don’t know anything else or because you’d rather do what you’ve always known rather than aspire to achieve more and potentially fail and feel rejected.

Seattle CoL is actually less than Los Angeles plus they don’t have the 13% state income tax either. I’d consider med/high at best. Definitely not close to NYC/Bay Area CoL

It's slow. I just got a promotion which brings usually like a 15% raise but I won't get another one for around 4-5 years I'd bet just because of how this company works. Otherwise it's an annual 3-5% raise. I got lucky last year and got another 10% increase on top of it because of performance and may get something like that again but even my boss warned me that the raises I've gotten over the last couple of years are an anomaly

IMO it's best to learn as much as you can now and look for jobs meanwhile

  • Go IT consulting. I went from 85k a year to 200k in the Healthcare IT space. Don’t burn bridges and network and you’ll have people wanting to hire you into a leadership role (IT Manager) at 130-140k starting back in a non-consulting role down the road. Don’t be afraid to make the jump to consulting. You can always get back into a FT role.
