  • Conference papers are unrefereed so have to be scrutinized carefully to determine value (exception: invited papers). Masters +3 is what is relevant from an HR perspective if the company makes any attempt to compensate people consistently across the company

    • Conference papers are generally quicker, and in a fast-moving feel this makes sense. A lot of academic journals will have both the regular journal and something called “letters” that publishes short papers in a faster timeframe.

Seems like in your field’s attempt to add rigor to things being published quickly, it lost a quick part!

Conferences will often require an abstract submission six or even eight months ahead, but the actual paper is much closer to the conference. Usually the only review reader will the the conference section chair and except for really crazy stuff they just publish whatever.

    • Yeah for us, journals are for quick publications since they accept papers on a rolling basis

  • As other comments say if you want to become a scientist go for a phd. However, most of these companies will hire you as an ml or research engineer w your background

I am just going to put this out there. Some (not all) may give you a hard time not having a PHD and with only 3 years experience. Also I wouldn’t consider Salesforce to be a top AI department. I’d include MSR there from a research perspective. If you’re thinking of applied AI/ML then the list expands. Good luck!
