I work at a startup here in the bay area (been there >1yr) and I've just told my boss that I'll be going on mat leave in 6 months. We've never had an employee go on mat leave in our US office so he told me he to do some research and find what other companies area giving.

What are companies in the Bay offering? And what if anything is the government helping to supplement?

I am just going through this myself. There was just so much confusion and lack of information on this.

4 weeks before delivery (use it or lose it type) + 6-8 weeks after (normal - c) ---> called disability leave. My company does 70% pay no tax (pretty much same pay). You have FMLA. Which means employment protection. If your pregnancy has complications, you get extra 4.5 weeks to this after delivery.
13 weeks bonding leave / primary caretaker at 100% pay. Taxable.
In addition, they said it's possible to take 52 weeks if needed. I didn't enquire too much into it.

@cnooc. I am not sure about other companies. We are definitely not same as canada which has nearly 13 months maternity.
I have heard similar stories and had same questions. Should I work until delivery to maximize the time with the baby? But no, it cannt be done. leave you take before delivery is upto 4 weeks and you can decide how much you want to. You CANNOT use that for after delivery. I am going with standard 2 weeks before due date, if the baby is late. Ah well it still part of my absence. The leave after is 6 weeks for normal and 8 weeks for c-section. This fmla/maternity leave has a max of 17.5 weeks. Then bonding leave starts.
So normally looks like I will get 2+(6-8)+13 weeks. I can choose 4 weeks before due date, but it's holiday season anyway 🤷🏻‍♀️
