I'm in Palo Alto right now but it's really boring so I want to move to a fun part of SF.

Rincon Hill has a lot of nice apartment complexes but it seems like you'd want to take a ~5 minute uber to go anywhere. Does anyone have experiences living in the area? Any recommendations?

I've heard Marina District is cool, but all of the apartment options look pretty shitty (I'm a luxury apartment degenerate). Would it be smarter to get a place closer to North SF?

Also is it worth increasing my 2-3 day/week commute from 15-20 minutes -> 1 hour bus ride? Interested to hear perspectives from ppl that have made the switch

Mission bay seems like a gentrified empty neighborhood. I work around there. Thoughts?

  • I spent my 20s in SF. It all depends on what lifestyle you want and whats important to you

If you want to go out, meet new people, date 20 year olds, maximize your 20s on steroids..., live in Northbeach, marina, hayes valley, pac heights, nopa, russian hill.

Avoid SOMA. Period. Do not live there.

Rincon hill is nice but boring. You gotta uber everywhere, it would make more sense if you were in your 30s and dated other 30 year olds.

Mission Bay is for tech couples with babies. Avoid if youre trying to have fun.

Ahhh that’s good to hear but how did you proceed in future - did you stick to eng - did you travel a lot in your 20s?

  • Not worth increasing your commute. I did the opposite switch, moving as close as possible to work and I loved life way more.

Do you typically go out a lot? I find myself going out a 4-5 nights a week but always have way more fun in SF.

My thought process is I can just zone out and listen to some audio book during the bus commute 2-3 days a week. Never had a commute that long but doesn't sound like the worst thing in the world.

    • I had a roommate work at FB and do that commute from SF everyday. He made it work somehow. If you can work from the bus then it's more doable.

    Mission Bay is nice

  • Housing stock in SF sucks, majority is old and shitty, but with that TC, you can easily find something nice. I would say The Mission or the Haight. The majority of the luxury buildings are in SOMA or Mission Bay, but it’s not worth it IMO, SOMA is basically just an extension of the tenderloin and Mission Bay is really detached from everything. Go get a nice remodeled unit in the Mission and enjoy the close proximity to bars, restaurants, parks, and lots of people in their 20’s and 30’s

    • Luxury condos in soma are worth it, you're paying 30% more for a place that's 100% nicer than a Victorian apt built in the 30s. Imagine living in a nice skyscraper with a view and walking to work. It's true the area is dead on weekends but it's so close to everything it doesn't matter.
