Working as DS for 4 years, the current position titiles as DS but actually BIE + a bit Analytics. I am thinking about what should be my next step, Senior DS or MLE. I am considering to switch to MLE role for higher pay, better WLB and clear job responsibities. But I am afraid I would need to start from L3 as my current work experience is not modeling focus.

So I've been an MLE for a few years.

MLE is a software engineering role except you import different libraries. You should think about whether you want to debug code all day, write unit tests, and desperately try to hit metrics goals that are set by a DS.

Or do you want to be the one setting the metrics goals?

The answer isn't as obvious as the poll makes it seem, and is very company-dependent imo. If it's an option, maybe you can try switching to your attached engineering team -- you'd have an advantage from already knowing the product and the people there.

    • I attach to Strategy team, not Engineer team. So DS will be the one who set up metrics goals in your team? Isnt it more like a PM role?

It's very company-dependent! At the places I've worked, each DS was affiliated with an engineering team and helped with goaling. PM and DS had a close partnership, since PMs need data to help inform their understanding of the product.

The normal split was DS helps set the goals and report the goal progress, while MLE achieves the goals. But depending on the team there can be some crossover.

I’m a DS, how would you move to MLE? Just curious, just getting into entry level would need us to clear a bit of modeling rounds?

    • Yes for sure. And for system design, I guess the requirements wont be too high as it is only for entry level? I am not sure if I did system design really great, whether we can have the chance of leveling up....

Got it, thank you! I’m really not so great with system design and other OoP concepts, maybe some other time for me. Good luck on your prep though 😊
