Metromile Engineering

I have an upcoming onsite interview at Metromile. It's for a Staff Engg role. How is it like to work at Metromile? What is the pay like? What are the pros and cons? Any pointers would be really appreciated. #tech YOE: 8 TC: 210

They had a big (like 1/3 their whole company) layoff back in april/may, so my guess is with their recent SPAC merger they are hiring people like crazy. They have a giant java monolithic backend which I bet hasn’t really changed recently (given their attrition), and probably only a handful of people understand how it works. There is also a php crm which was the original crm when they started up, the java monolith wraps it and adds its own mysql schema to the same rds db. Yes its as ugly as it sounds. Pay was low-ish but that’s probably changed now that equity is worth real money. There are separate job roles between ops and engineering, and at least a year ago engineers had extremely limited access to aws resources (probably the main factor in the size/breadth of the monolith). Also, 60+% of the engineering staff are offshore contractors. The cto is a salesman, he’ll sell you the world.
