Posting for a friend.

My friend works at a bank in TechOPS (YOE: 8 years) and has two opportunities to move internally -
1. Credit risk analysis
2. AI-oriented product management for building a voice assistant

The first one is moving towards finance and the second one is working in tech management for newer technologies.

Looking for guidance on future prospects, especially on the credit risk analysis role. Have little info on the career track in terms of vertical movement and TC growth.

They could not be more different so I'm not sure why it's a hard decision. If your friend has 8 YOE, hopefully they'd have a sense of what they want to do? Credit risk is also broad within itself. Is it credit risk for corporates or consumers or even governments? If corporates, what sector and and which bank? Is the work more cookie cutter paperwork or is it highly analytical? What kind of deal exposure would your friend get? I'd steer clear from if it's consumer finance related. Muni finance is kinda dead end as well

Paying well is relative. You can't make front office finance money doing consumer credit analytics but you can make data analyst kind of money. Slightly more if you're a phd tackling fraud problems but that's not the norm. There are plenty of job openings within consumer credit, but to me, they aren't really exit opps because you wouldn't be jumping to something significantly better or more lucrative. Not really a niche worth building your career on

I don’t consider it finance role at all, it’s pure analytics and credit risk is just a field where it’s applied. I have connections who exited to places like Uber, Lyft, Facebook and Google or who chose to stay in FinTech and take on leadership roles. I’m not talking about banks.

  • Too little information honestly to provide meaningful guidance. Credit Risk analysis is always going to be a hot topic and prior experience helps in vertical growth faster.
AI/Prod. Mgmt relatively a tough sport. Vertical growth and satisfaction heavily depends on overall team success - probably needs more effort.

But your friend must follow what fits well into their background/experience/comfort-levels + their future ambitions

What extra information would you like? Current relevance and background ties well into AI product management but wondering if getting the business domain knowledge (in this case credit knowledge) would be useful for the future for faster growth. Most of the other team members in credit are MBAs in Finance or Stats/Econ majors.
