Should I be honest about pursuing a second remote job?

I work full time in the office during New York hours. I’m interested in a remote opportunity (company based in Europe).

I’m curious if I should be up front about them being a second job, which I’d mostly be pursuing out of pure personal interest in the role. If I could commit the appropriate # of hours, and my current employer would have no issue, I don’t see what could be so bad about it right?

  • Since you work at Citadel, would love to refer you to Jane Street for your second job. We have a London office, so you can keep European hours.

For what it’s worth, I sent probably 50-100 applications to google over the years, all went nowhere. Same amount to many other tech companies. So many rejections it’s hilarious.

Keep going if that’s what you’re really interested in.

  • Most companies will prevent their full time employees to work at other places full time. Read your employment conditions, but some common reasons, NDA, non-compete, denying their competitors a high value employee’s time, wanting their employee’s ideas to themselves etc…

They would even argue, this is the main reason why they are paying you this high salary…

If you tell them they will provably deny it.
If you don’t tell them and if it gets discovered, you’ll probably get fired.

We have pretty clear policies basically stating that, as long as there isn’t a professional conflict of interest, it can be considered.

    • “Considered” doesn’t mean “will be accepted”
We have a “side project” application process, a lot of things get scrutinized, (how many hours a week of your time? Is it paid? Conflict of interest? Competitor? Etc…)

If it’s 2-3 hours a week, probably ok.

How do you have time though?
Also could it be a conflict of interest?
