Why is Microsoft so cheap with TC? How can they attract top talent?

Interviewed at MSFT and recruiter said in email expect "exceptional offer" and they are getting "CVP approval". I got upleveled to Principal/L65 from e5. Offer seems low-ball. I made same as E4 3 years ago. How can msft attract top talent with such shitty TC?

Principal/L65 offer:
$175k base, $400k RSU, $100k sign on
TC: $310k

I am currently E5 with ~435k TC (before crash). It's $370k..after crash

    They don't care. I left as L64 doing E4 work (there wasn't enough work to). I was doing 10hr/w.. Microsoft has too many dead weights. It can lay off 30% SWE and can still function exactly as is.

  • Top 20% in MSFT are very well paid. Agreed median is lower compared to F and G. But if you are in top 20% percent, you will notice your TC is actually in par. If its not then either you are not in top 20% or you are on a shitty team.

    • That is probably true. On the other hand, F/G are similar to Microsoft 15 years ago. I am not impressed about the engineers at FB myself. If FB doesn’t pay as high as it does now, it will be much worse.

      ^Agree with that. Since both Fb/G have had to scale so much the bar definitely went down and also people found ways to circumvent the interview process through leetcode(I dont blame anyone heck I leetocded myself but it shouldnt have been this way)
      Maybe Some X startup is going to be the next Google in terms of talent.

      We try to leave but sometimes it doesn’t work out. We get a lot of crap to deal with at work too sometimes.

    • We offer a similar stock amount up front to new grads. We don't mention that our stock refreshers are peanuts. It usually takes them a few years to realize. It works really well with people on visas. By that point we have started the green card process and they are semi trapped with us.

    They dont need to, their products are successful mostly due to great executive leadership on focussing on right domains
