Trying to determine if I got played. Got through final interview round at Databricks and was told they would be in touch soon. Feedback from my impression was good. Got through all interviews in less than 2 weeks (non-tech). Recruiter pinged me and asked to talk comp/timing etc, naturally, I thought an offer was coming. So I talk to recruiter who discusses pay band, timing, etc. Pay is slightly less than what I make now and so I gave that feedback. Told him we are in same ballpark though, and I'm very interested. Haven't heard back in two days since that call. Anyone else with this experience? Discussing comp after final interview seemed very odd to me. Usually something they'll broach in screening call as a first step. Feel like they didn't know how to price the job, and while they want 10 years of experience, want to pay for way less. Any insight?

It’s only been 2 days. If your assessment is correct, they might be discussing internally what band to align this to for their need

That's fair. I forgot to mention, I did tell them I expect a competing offer quite soon though so I'd have expected at least a "you're still in the running"

I've never heard of a company negotiating comp before the interviews are finished. Why would they bother before they know if they even want to hire you?

I can't tell if you're being facetious. Obviously it is much quicker and easier to determine if someone is a financial match than it is if they are a good match to work at your org. Comp discussion is during the phone screen 99% of the time. Also they weren't negotiating comp, because there wasn't an offer.

I talk money at the start. Why go all the way to final without knowing. My interviews at Databricks were probably not normal, but 2nd interview with recruiter we discussed what I wanted before the loop. After loop they presented a verbal offer meeting what I asked for. I didn’t nickel and dime them as the negotiation is with the hiring manager.

  • Got a reject after reference check. Absolutely don’t respect candidates time and effort.

Not sure. You think they'd just say if they were. I provided references pretty early in the process.
