You won't learn front end development in college, but there are a ton of resources online. Try freecodecamp.com and that will open you up to other topics. Take a deep dive into Javascript. For that I'd recommend the "You Don't Know JS" book series by Kyle Simpson. Learn React or Angular after that. Don't neglect unit testing.

The salary gap isn't that large and it's closing fast as the demand for FEE's increases. A CS degree would still be good for learning fundamentals that apply to both client and server-side development.

Just do a regular CS degree and become a software engineer... You make more money and aren't looked down on.

Oh, and when interviewing as a front end engineer, all the backend questions are still fair game. For normal sde you only need the backend stuff.

  • Agreeing with the closing comp gap. I’ve seen issues in the past with the “looked down on” stigma, but that’s often to do with company culture and what you’re actually doing as a FED alongside the back end devs/engineers. Are you just slinging HTML/CSS/jQuery, or are you getting into React/Angular/VueJS and helping to build out a web app?

The FED role is ever-expanding and neither of those options are out of the question, but the latter skill set pays more.

Actually try to learn what you're doing don't just try to pass the class. I know a lot of people that didn't even bother trying to actually learn how to it themselves and they just wanted to pass.
