Assuming the same company offers two different TC for different teams in Seattle and Austin, which one would be better to choose? Both base pay are same.

If living frugal and single, how much difference in savings can be seen one over the other

Appreciate if you can specify any other advantages for one over the other apart from TC

  • Depends on your priorities
    Austin
    1. Weather

    • Ya The difference at most would be 5k a year. If you are looking for pure financial I would say Seattle is better both pay wise and future opportunities wise. Austin is better if you are looking to buy a house or if you love warm weather

If you are a single heterosexual male, Austin has lots of beautiful women.

@op - Blind has very very biased audience with opinions and no facts. I put down my split in terms of cost of living. Right now, apartments are actually cheap in Seattle and you’ll know that since you already are there. If you can find an apartment less than 1200$ a month in Austin including utilities in Austin (which I doubt you can), then you are looking at saving the same amount of money in both the places, else it’s not worth it.

I’ve spent all my time here in Austin and have lived here for several years. Unless you want to buy a house, I wouldn’t recommend moving. And You get houses only in Leander area which is technically a desert in the middle of nowhere and that too for 600k. Check out Taylor Morrison’s floor plans.

I was a little confused on how you calculated the 22k amount as after tax.

Same boat as you @alone. Ppl are crazy to say austin is cheap. Theres maybe only a 1k differential with Seattle and 2k diff with the bay in col/month, yet salary difference make up for this difference. Most austin salaries have hard time cracking 200k for seniors Eng while bay is giving out 300k to new grad and 250k in Seattle.

So it comes down to weather. Not TC diff cuz the pay is adjusted for the area.
