Getting fired on H1B.. what's next?

Jun 2, 2018 96 Comments

Manager gave me heads up after recent 1-1. I have about 2 months before being managed out. After June I will likely be put on PIP and then fired. I started preparing and updated my LinkedIn status.

How do I explain to new employers about my situation? I am E4 and was previously at Amazon for 3 yrs (SDE2). I have over 3.5yrs experience total.

Wow just 6 months. What does fb expect ? It takes time for a new hire to get equipped with the system.

  • The story needs to be that you found the Facebook culture to be a bad fit and that you quit. If you don’t get a job right away that gap needs to be explained as you took some time off to travel. Being honest with recruiters and managers will not help you

Theoretically he can upto 2 months, but the problem with RFEs etc there is no guarantee he can complete his transfer within 15 days.
Best course of action is to get a job today.
But sad part is being managed out in 6 months , that is like the ramp up time in Google. WTF!!

I continue to be amazed that many people don't realize FB has a really shitty culture. I know many high quality people who couldn't last a year. Either they suck at hiring, or there is really something else wrong. I thought FB would have grown out of this by now. It would make he think long and hard about working at FB because the people I know were weak some were exceptional.

Retention number is often skewed for various reasons. Some early employees stays for 10+ yrs before leaving and skewing the retention number

Ours is not skewed as we keep it separately of each trench of start dates and for each year (how many people who started at the beginning of the year are still here)
