I lead marketing for a tech company and want to get a better idea of what’s a good base salary for someone in a similar situation.

I make $80K salary and have just over 1% in equity. The company revenue has skyrocketed since I started from 5 to 7 figures at just a year old and were valued at over $300M. I was the first marketing hire and 7th hire.

Happy to discuss in detail over inbox msgs #growth #marketing #equity

What’s your location and YOE? $80k sounds really low, but 1% equity is pretty huge.

I’m in South Florida (close to Miami). 8 years of experience working primarily in social media. I worked as a social media director before transitioning into my current role as head of content. Definitely not a seasoned department head yet but not junior level either.

      Thanks for the feedback!

YOE? Tech companies pay over 180-250k on base for director. 80k is pitiful but you started at a 5 figure company. Your pay was never adjusted.

Location is key. $80k is good if you're in Omaha or Des Moines but not if you're in a top 10 city. If your title is actually director of marketing you should be seeing between $100k - $150k base. Equity, bonuses, stock are all extra. If you have more than 3 YOE you're underselling yourself.

I'm a director of paid media at an agency, grew from me and the owners to 35 employees, have my own department but now I'm looking at inhouse marketing.

I'm currently at 78k base, 15% Bonus, 2% equity but don't believe the owners can get to a sale.

What is a good inhouse marketing "next step" for me to take? Do tons of consulting for clients on their businesses across ecom, SaaS, b2b, lead gen, everything.

What’s years of experience and size of company. Titles are sometimes not accurate esp at smaller companies. You could be head of marketing at small company but just manager at larger. If director you should be seeing at least $150k but $175-200k+ for base is more reasonable for the large metro areas. Not sure about other areas.
