Impact of layoff on personal health and routine.

Nov 11, 2020 3 Comments

I was laid off from my job due to the impact of covid-19. I'm a Canadian permanent resident, so dont have a deadline to find a new role. Also I have some Interviews lined up, and responses from recruiters have been positive.
Nevertheless, my routine has been completely upended, with me sleeping early in the morning and getting up late. I have also lost motivation to exercise, and the binge eating disorder that I had overcome is now resurfacing and I'm putting on weight. It's hard to get the motivation to even go out for a walk.
I wanted to ask the blind community to share how your past layoffs and unemployed stints have affected your general health and routine. Have you been able to brush it off and just go through the job search motions, or do you find yourself regressing towards past bad habits and behaviours that can be described as self harming.

Use this opportunity to go and pursue your next role you want to be at. Its difficult to stay focussed. You need to do the hard work and keep your calm. Have a routine and stick to it. Leave your phone in an another room while your studying. Try doing some exercise or yoga at your home. Prepare your meals in advance so you eat healthy food. Everything happens for a reason. Keep your faith and go on.

I had a close family member go through this. I’d recommend keeping in mind that work isn’t everything in life. Look at this as an opportunity to do small things you don’t get to do when you’re working! Reading a book, drawing, even going out for walks. As you said you’ve gotten positive responses so far, you’ll land something sooner or later. You have another 30+ years to focus on work a few months or even a year not working is such a small percentage of that time. Lastly I’ve known people quitting their jobs right now to just slow things down and not have the work stress on top of other stresses they have. Stay positive!
