Interviewing at a new-ish startup, and I've been through 4 interviews (all via phone/Skype video since I'm in NY, and role is in Cali). Is it odd that no discussion of comp has come up yet. I've been waiting for someone to bring it up...but nobody has. Next round is to fly me out for final rounds, which is being arranged now...but has anyone else experienced this? Is it some sort of tactic, or just a major oversight?
This isn’t uncommon especially if it’s a startup with an immature or not established recruiting function. Or even if there is some HR/ recruiting in place the communication didn’t happen between hiring mgr and recruiter. Maybe one didn’t tell the other this hasn’t been covered yet. Or they’re waiting to see how you interview to decide on your leveling or how high they’re willing to go. It’s lawful to ask them what’s the budget for this role especially now that you’re facing the decision to fly out. Huge commitment to do this. You need reassurance that at the end all this time and energy has been worth it for both sides. I’d bring up to recruiter.
If they aren’t talking about comp with you in the first conversation, then that’s a red flag. There is nothing weird about asking ever. I’m a recruiter and ALWAYS talk about this in a first conversation.

You have the power to bring it up. Why risk wasting your own time? I always talk ballparks at the start of a process. In fact under CA law you have the right to be told the salary banding for the role
Yea at this point I plan to, rather than burning 2 PTO days to fly out there and back if the comp is not in my range...just curious if anyone else has had this. Usually I've had this be part of the first convo during the recruiter screening
I've definitely had people try to breeze through without mentioning it, but I guess I never gave them the chance to wait very long :) good luck!
