"I don't think a four year degree is necessary to be proficient at coding. I think that's an old, traditional view. What we found out is that if we can get coding in the early grades and have a progression of difficulty over the tenure of somebody's high school years, by the time you graduate kids like Liam, as an example of this, they're already writing apps that could be put on the App Store," Tim Cook https://www.businesstoday.in/latest/trends/tim-cook-apple-ceo-says-4-year-degree-not-necessary-coding/story/345666.html
coding mobile apps or web apps (which is significant percent of engineering), not necessary. to design scalable infrastructure, to learn cutting edge or complicated tech, to learn how to learn things you don't know, yes, it's very valuable.
Sure knowledge is valuable. But that knowledge doesn’t need to acquired with a 4 year college degree.
@querty lol yes just learn to leetcode
Coding and writing good code is not the same.
Wonder if the Apple folks working in the CoreOS group agree.
Can be treated like the Germans do with apprenticeship programs from a young age.
Definitely!
Would be good if companies realize LC hard are not necessary for coding.
LC hard questions are not meant to judge your coding skills. they are meant to test if you can learn quickly (in the few weeks before interview) and perform under stress.
Elon Musk says he doesn’t care if you went to college or if you have a degree but in the early days of Tesla/SpaceX they only hired engineers from top universities and even now all their jobs require you to have at least a bachelor’s degree in a STEM field. Even Apple recruiters asked about my education when I applied. I roll my eyes when CEO’s say stuff like this.
I'm not sure why people work at anyone of his companies. From what I've heard wlb sucks and the pay isn't that great. It's like a cult.
Education bashing is the new trend. Although it's possible to become a very good self taught engineer, it requires a lot of dedication and hard work. I've met only one such person in my life so far.
Everyone who wasted time and money on college is pretty triggered.
Someone in there it should say “this only applies if you’re white”
Yup, motivation and experience are all that is really needed.
