Wondering if putting money into a 401k with 50% max matching makes sense. The way I see it is you only need a 401k if you will not strike it rich since if you do then you won't need it anyways. I'm young I have lots of time to make money I feel it is better for me to invest money into stocks rather than a 401k. Yes tax deductions but I still believe I could grow that money at a faster pace through investments than I would if I placed it into some managed 401k funds. Thoughts?

  • Oh summer child. You have not gone through a rough patch in life. It won’t be as rosy always. Save money, a little bit.

50% Matching is an instant, guaranteed 50% return on investment. It lowers your taxable income too. Even in the craziest markets you’d be insanely lucky to get 50% return on your stock investments in a brokerage account. Max your 401K and then invest however you’d like. There’s no better alternative.

  • People who pass up free money don't strike it rich by investing.
