Amazon made me an offer a while ago and I accept it because it's 50% better than my current compensation, and Microsoft isn't know to be able to compete that way. We're talking about relatively top of the band for Amazon here (340k). I accepted this offer because I never thought MSFT could even match it and I'm not a fan of counter offers to begin with.
But then, as I told my manager I was leaving, he was able to pull off a very competitive offer. It doesn't beat the Amazon offer overall, but the first year is higher (40k more) and the next 3 years are lower. Now I have a few conflicting thoughts:
1. I'd almost 100% be burning a bridge at Amazon. I'm not a fan of the company, but it's nice to have in your back pocket in 4 years if I have nothing else and if my compensation at MSFT significantly drops since MSFT is known to have bad refreshers.
2. The Microsoft offer includes a promotion to senior. How could this impact future interviewing loops compared to being L5 at Amazon?
3. I've never been a fan of counter offers because of obvious reasons, but I like the project/manager/team at Microsoft. The Amazon team looks good and seems to have a decent manager, but it's still an unknown and mostly speculation.
There are a lot of variables in play here including potentially burning bridges. The first option (going to Amazon) doesn't burn any bridges and allows me to come back to Microsoft in the future if things don't work out, but at the same time having to deal with a lot of uncertain variables when it comes to the project and the manager.
The second option (staying at MSFT) is safer in the short term and more profitable for the first year, but I may lose Amazon as a backup plan if I need it in the future.
I think I need help with analyzing those variables. Also, it would help if I could somehow have access to internal tech surveys for the team/manager on Blind, potentially through DMs :D
