I already passed the HC and I'm currently in the team matching phase at google.

My recruiter called and said to start thinking about TC.

I've never negotiated before and have no idea how to do it, but I have been looking at levels.fyi and see that the top L4 offers are ~300K. I'd be happy with a TC of ~270k-280k.

What do I tell my recruiter my expectations to get at least the ~270k-280k range?

Current TC: 150k
YoE: 4

You tell them your target is ~300k so if they lowball it’s at least close to the range you’re content with.

The way to do it is to say that FB (insert Goog competitor) is offering $310 for this role so you expect something in that range. Then they'll come back with $295 or something. Ask for a signing bonus. I didn't when I worked at Goog so they just didn't give me one. I'm sure if I would have just mentioned it they would have thrown $15-25 at me. Also make sure the vesting schedule is monthly. I got a quarterly vesting schedule but I know others have monthly.

But there is nothing wrong in saying someone you know got bla bla bla offer in another company, so you are expecting similar numbers for yourself. My friend and I did that and it was not taken negatively, not in google though.

What is the usual hike one can expect while switching? Is 10-20% a good number?

    • Counterpoint to amazon, i think going to a FAANG company (esp google since they're always lowballing) is a valid reason to switch even if it's just a10% bump. Never underestimate the power of being at the most reputable tech companies in the world. Even if the one time increase is just 10%, you can be sure the next role you go to will come with a much higher increase.

I actually agree with this too, but only if you’re not already at a top tech company. Then you should try to get to one ASAP even with a minimal TC jump.

But if you’re at a top company like a Microsoft, Uber, Pinterest, etc. then it’s not worth it. Those names aren’t as good as Google but pretty close where the FAANG brand alone isn’t worth it
