I reneged a good offer. I was not sure about the company ( think mongodb, cockroachdb). So decided to stay at Amazon. But the money I left on the table was a lot (36%). I reneged on Thursday and the HM asked me if they can do something better. But I said “no, thank you.” I am still not sure if this is the right decision. But tempted to go back and ask them for the offer back. Is it a bad idea?

TC: L6 non-tech 260K
New TC: 350K and better title ( but I know a better title at a smaller place does not make a difference)

My question even if they offer it now will it back fire after I join the company and do I look like a complete indecisive person who is flip flopping. I did tell them from the beginning that it is a hard decision for me as I really like my current project.

I think it’s fine - provide a final reason why, then let them make the decision

Reneged or rejected? Reneged means you accepted the offer, then went back on the acceptance. Rejected means you said no to the offer. Very different implications.

  • Nah, if it's tier 2/3 I wouldn't bother. Amazon may suck but at least it has brand name. I just gave up a $500k TC offer (half paper money) and my TC is $300k. Keep holding for something better. What I tell myself is if I can get a $500k offer I can get a better one later down the road.

I will admit that it was a hard choice to reject but paper money and lesser tier made it a deal breaker.

I would always pick an offer with medium/small company. In this case the money is also good. You will always learn and grow more in a small company- not the larger ones.

Everyone knows what brand value Amazon carries.
