My goal is to get a position with good wlb. If I’m offered staff, is it hard to survive without an existing network built in google? Do they fire staff for non performance? Is it better to ask for senior if I want to coast?

I think it’s hard to get fired at google for most positions lol, unless you’re an absolute ass of a human being like damore.

The trick for L6 is to be independent and ahead of the issues, which is hard for a new guy. Early, I strongly suggest getting yourself invited to convos with teams around your project. Learn the issues from the outside perspective.

You need to contribute, but if you work 8 good hours and go home, you'll be fine.

Is it okay to spend all your time trying to lead but not actually do any coding?

Yes, though some coding will be useful/necessary. At the start, expect some coding assignments. You need to be taking that time to find some problems that need solving.

Get to a point where your manager isn't feeding you work by the six month mark and you'll be fine.
