I get that product development is all about finding a pain point and solving it. But how do you identify a pain point worth solving? I am willing to put in the work and I am relatively good at problem solving, I just don’t know how to come up with the problem.

Listen to customers. What’s driving contacts to your call centers? What are reviews saying? Etc

Honestly don’t start a startup if you struggle with finding a problem to solve

You look so smart from your response. You have a lot to offer than “don’t do it”

Sometimes not doing something is better than wasting your time. Saying as someone who quit a Fang job on a great trajectory because I fell into startup fantasy for some reason. “Know thyself” can’t be more true regarding startup world. If someone had a thing to succeed in a startup, they would probably be already too busy working on 5 different projects with 100 other ideas in their notebook. Some people are just good at finding problems that other people overlook. Most of us aren’t that awake and regret why something was so obvious yet they couldn’t think of it themselves. It’s like a Columbus’ egg. I seriously think it’s not meant for everyone and easily a waste of time and energy for most people.

Most startups pivot on their idea before finding something that works. I think it's more about building a strong team

    • @1811 I get ya but ur general band helps the community think on ur level. Solving pain points at different levels is different. At L7 in addition to dogfooding, user feedback captures etc, the person will also be thinking big pictures. What’s the macro trend? Where r things converging? How do U envision ur field/expertise/life in 5-10 years? Which problems r 3X each year? Etc.

I loosely follow the TRIZ practices: find a contradiction or tradeoff (ex. growing food is nice but takes a lot of land), then look for similar contradictions in other industries or sciences (houses take a lot of space so cities built tall buildings) and try to apply it to your contradiction (result is Vertical farming)

Buy a lightbulb and bubble. Put the lightbulb inside the bubble. That’s how pink panther gets the ideas.
