#WalmartLabs PM interview: engineer round

Is Walmart still asking coding questions to product managers?

My friend shared the horrible experience from about three years ago when the engineer interviewing her was not even satisfied with pseudo code.. they wanted syntactically correct code.

It's Walmart, roll in on a Rascal with with an untucked, ketchup stained t-shirt and a 'fuck you' ballcap. They'll accept you as one of them.

Careful Amazon guys! With this attitude, you may be headed in the direction of Uber.

    • I am sure the amazon guy here doesn't represent everyone in the company so it's sad that he is creating such a negative impression about the company by posting such arrogant and immature comments. Amazon will definitely go places, I am not sure about this guy though. Being anonymous brings out the true colors of the individuals.

  • I am a successful product manager at Walmart labs, and have never written code in my life. The experience your friend had must have been a one off. Some times individual behaviors don't represent company culture.

Syntax errors won't matter. But in general you need to give an impression that you are comfortable writing code if your job requirements needs that. Some practice would easily get you there. And obviously confidence matters. Especially at Walmart where exuding confidence and hiding incompetence is the knack to rise higher.

So I should assume that they will ask coding questions even though my interview is for a product management position? This is a bit confusing. In the telephonic interview, the hiring manager mentioned that they expect their product managers to have an understanding of tech, but coding is not needed.

  • Why not? If you write fucking code then you should be able to produce syntactically correct code on a whiteboard. If you don't write code like a lot of engineers at Microsoft then who wants to hire you?

This is a product management interview. I have written plenty of code in my pre-MBA days and I'm still comfortable at understanding code. But writing code is no longer an expertise for me.
