#interview #finance #citi #jpmorgan #jpmorganchase Became a SVP at Citi just a few weeks back. Interviewing for VP position at JP. As many of you may already know, SVP designation doesn’t exist at JP. Would this transition make sense? Hope I am not diluting my designation by making this move. As I became a SVP just a while back, ED at JP (equivalent to Director at Citi) would not be possible at the moment. Comments? Advice? EDIT: Thanks for all the comments below. I genuinely appreciate all the advice. Positive comments made me ponder and the negative ones made me smile. 🙂 Based on whatever I read. - Current TC: $200K - JP offer: $250K TC (although I didn’t talk with the HR about the band I would be in) - I didn’t push for ED as I became SVP just a while back. Honestly I wasn’t even thinking about the switch. The recruiter reached out and I just gave the interviews. - Turning 31 soon - Did my undergrad and MBA from ivy leagues. Had an offer from a bulge bracket bank in M&A but wanted something different in life. M&A folks make money but I find their job really monotonous and boring. Not challenging in my opinion. I wanted to solve complex business problems and got this interesting role at Citi (not sharing too many details). - I am sorry but I can’t just chase tc. No offense to anyone else here. - The role at JP seems more challenging than my current role. - I also needed more time for my other passions. With this job, I get more time to focus on my fitness. I have completed a few ironman triathlons across the country. Workout 6 days a week (2 hrs a day) with dedication. Could be 4 hrs a day when I am about to participate in a triathlon. - I can wrap up my daily office work in literally 2-3 hrs (other than a few busy days) which gives me a lot of time to focus on my startup as well. I want to build something of my own and have been working diligently on it. - I love to invest. Trade stocks and crypto. Forex trading during the night time. - I play flute and am really great at it. - Have travelled across the world and ran across various mountain ranges in Europe and South America So please understand that each person has a different and unique definition of success. Success is not always about the tc. I have envisioned a different kind of life for myself. One that would be more fulfilling for me. But to each their own. Love and respect for all of you. 🙂
Both firms suck...stick to porn
Does the VP role offers higher compensation? That’s all that matters to me. They can call me specialist if they want as long as they pay good money.
Career progression (I.e. higher compensation tomorrow) correlates with you having the right title, especially if you’re moving between companies.
Agreed with Amazon, unless you’re a contractor
I know a guy who was AVP in Citi and moved to Chase as VP. I also know a guy with less than 10 years of total workex who is VP in Chase. Do check out the LinkedIn Profile of people who made similar transitions.
People will think you were fired
Thanks for your comment but I don’t think that should be an issue. All recruiters and folks working in finance know that SVP is a designation that exists only at Citi. Other banks have a very wide salary band for the VP after which you directly become a Director/Exec Director. So at the end of the day, I would still be 2 steps away from the top level- MD.
Oh okay just go where you’re happier then
What does VP translate to tech position??
Entry level 🤣 L3 maybe
VP would probably match to L4/L5 at Google. Then Director would match to L6 to L7. Managing Director would be L7 and higher.
Title is only one of the considerations. Check whether the entire package makes sense. Package means salary, benefits, PTO, but also job description, exposure to senior/wider audience, clients, who will be your boss (their exposure, title,...),...

OP, I worked at Citi as an L15 ( if I recall correctly ) and I would NOT take a VP title at Chase unless it directly correlates with that level and it’s a step up in responsibility and pay. Your achievement of making SVP at Citi will be completely washed away, as don’t trust Chase to honor that transition even in the near future. I know this well, as I have deep knowledge of their culture and inner workings. You will hurt yourself in future career prospects if Chase doesn’t work out as well.

People will think you’re fancy at JP. That’s what comes to my mind. It’s what you DO and can offer. May I ask how old you are? 30s? 50s? Sounds like late 30s. And how long have you been w Citi?

😂😂 finance roles are ridiculously funny since every third person is a vp of some form.. SVP would map to a Sr Software Engineer in silicon valley
Not sr engineer but maybe senior engineering manager.
