My end goal is to become a software engineer. In the meantime and while in college I wanted to do cloud architecture. So I muscled up and managed to pass the AWS Solutions Architect- Associate Certification. I start college beginning of 2022 and I was hoping to get a remote cloud job before that point, but no company will hire a 18 year old with no experience and just a certification. What’s my next step in order to get a job as a cloud architect?

Maybe it’s just me thinking out of my head, but wouldn’t a 18-year-old with a AWS Certification stand out a bit?

  • Hands on experience matters much more than certifications. I don’t mean to downplay your achievement, but the associate certs don’t hold much weight because almost anyone can obtain one with enough study, even without ever using AWS. They’re the equivalent of A+ in the IT world.

If you want to be a SWE then focus hard on learning how to code and worry about cloud later. Generally you become an architect after you’ve been an engineer for a few years minimum (don’t trust anyone in an architecture role who has never programmed before). What do your programming skills look like?

    • It sounds like you are off to a good start but you’ve got the cart before the horse. It might be good to start working on your discrete math skills and follow something like Code by Petzold so you have an understanding of how computers work from the ground up. Then try combining the math and low-level programming skills by implementing some basic algorithms in C. This will give you an immense bump over your peers as you begin your CS degree. And you will quickly learn if programming isn’t for you.
