Hello People on Blind,
I am software dev with 2+ years of experience. Over the last year, I have worked with multiple cross functional teams across different domains and found myself to be better suited as a program Manager. I am good programmer, but honestly my heart is not into it anymore. I have studied and learned new languages languages but was planning to switch a PM role only to be blocked by my manager on the transfer. Is anybody hiring into a PM role ?
I would love to send you my resume and talk about it. I definitely think I would make a much better PM than an SDE in the longer run.

Based out of Seattle but open to relocation.

I have been wanting to Switch to Product Manager but most of them require a lot of experience as a Product Manager. Program Manager is an entry to that. I have already worked with a lot of cross functional teams, agreeing on changes and pushing back on stuff that is highly improbable from my team to achieve in the given timeline. So Program Management helps me get experience with it.

Program Management is definitely not a stepping stone to product management, unless you are at Microsoft where they call PMs β€œProgram Managers”. In fact I have never seen anyone switch from program management to PM. They are completely different skill sets

I made the switch from SWE to TPM during covid. Be really sure you like dealing with people & process. Are you OK herding cats instead of letting your technical contributions speak for themselves?

    • How did you manage that transition? I am in a similar boat to OP. 3 YOE as a SWE, 1 YOE as a Scrum Master. I am about to get my CSM certification; I completed training on October 15. I don’t enjoy programming anymore. I want to leverage my software development, maintenance, and deployment experience and transition into a TPM role, but I’m only met with rejection. Those roles seem to require so many more years of experience than I have. Recruiters often ask me, β€œare you SURE you’re only interested in TPM/Scrum Master roles and not SWE?”

I get it, but I think I can drive changes and work between different teams in a highly efficient manner. So I think I would be good at it.

Don’t do it. Most of the PgM have lot of experience and do it because they are not great coders .. try ProdMgr first and worst case at least TPM .. PgM is last resort

Thank You. But in my experience most product managers require a lot of experience which I don’t have and not sure how to start. Can you advise in where how to start getting noticed by other recruiters with most of resume being strong as an SDE.

You can do TPM, and not PgM (which is non technical).

Most of my fellow TPMs are also former SWE / EMs or something adjacent.

Why are you switching out btw? Product Mgr owns product vision etc, and TPM / PgM does the execution. As someone else mentioned, different skillsets. Can you move to some design oriented roles? They are product adjacent.
