So I hear frequently that Microsoft does not pay as well as other companies but is there a reason why? Does anyone know if they intend on raising salaries to be more competitive similar to what Amazon did?

    Cuz it can.

Many people idolize google and Microsoft. They’ll post about how they want to work at msft one day.

    Then look at what happens.

  • Some people like the safety of Microsoft: the most diversified tech company out there that even if the economy tanks, Microsoft will still be ok; they also don’t fire often, you can be a mediocre performer for years and nobody cares. And in the current economy, many people rely on such a safety net, so they can afford to pay lower than their peers.

That said, the low pay concern is growing rapidly with the company, and the HR chief twice in a row said in the company-wide forum that they are looking into it with the board. The rumor is that substantial change is coming, but nobody knows how meaningful this change will be.

Msft has expanded considerably outside Redmond where they can pay less but it's still decent for local market like Atlanta and Dallas.
Msft hiring still going strong but I think they will scale back next year as economy weakens. I have only recently joined but yeah job security was one reason I joined. I do expect msft to take advantage of weak economy to do a purge however like they did back in 2009

    • This is like automotive, but the pay is even lower than MSFT

  • Microsoft pays low because they (think they) get away with it. They are playing chicken with their employees. They know the market rates because they have to make high offers to hire anyone. For years, the discrepancy was tolerable. Now everyone I know is looking to change jobs. They also sell culture as part of TC, but have created toxic culture in parts of the company.

If you have real experience and actually know shit then negotiate your comp. It’s a total comp game not a base pay game imho. Assuming the vast majority of engineering types in this forum, I would learn negotiation as opposed to leet code crap.

It depends on what you bring to the table and also your negotiation skills. Of course they don’t pay as much as google but I made more money at Microsoft than Amazon and loved working at Microsoft. It was a breath of fresh air compare to Amazon’s fake urgencies and below par work. I actually grew personally and professionally as I was not only firefighting and was actually able to focus on lot of things beyond avoiding to be an escape goat. I would not mind going back at a higher level where the pay differences diminish and Microsoft pays really well!

Honestly I would not know. Levels.fyi is your best bet. Also a lot of it depends on your expectation and how well can you negotiate.
