I am currently a Subject Matter Expert in Mortgage Underwriting for a startup. Been in tech for 6 months, but mortgage for 10+ years.
I have taken on several of the “PM responsibilities” and more of a leadership role within our product team. Now helping to plan for sprints, groom the backlog, assign work for BSAs, monitor the completion of work, and respond to CSM escalations from clients.
We recently (finally) posted a job opening for a PM position, the first official PM opening for us. I inquired about it and the 5-7 years product management experience requirement, which I do NOT have. I was told it was a hard requirement and that the person they hire will be grooming me to become a PM or Product Owner.
I have zero interest in exploring a job elsewhere. I enjoy my job and what I do, just want a title that I think better communicates my leadership role within the team.
How do you think I can best prep for a formal PM role? Been studying and killing it at work already. What else can I be doing?
