I got an offer to work for Meta as IC5. I worked at Amazon for 2.5 years and I know their stack rank system means that you’re always very competitive against your peers cuz you don’t wanna be in the bottom x% at EoY.

Any idea if Meta is similar? If not, can anyone elaborate on what it’s like? I like working with my peers to make awesome products, not worry about looking good on paper to save my skin.

Poor soul. You have typical Amazon PTSD
Most other companies will retain their good engineers at any cost.

Just be good enough. Form my understanding the peer pressure comes at Meta as it dangles large carrots to it’s engineers and also a general immaturity of their leadership (because of fast promos, you can have some very young managers who don’t know what they are doing)

Meta is like other companies where you are measured against your goals. Not against the team.

Meta has no forced PIP quota like Amazon.

There are *manager* calibrations which are more intended to help ensure fairness so a “MA” is consistently applied vs every manager having their own definition so there does end up being comparisons but there is no forced stack rank and an MM is not a PIP sentence. Usually you’d see a couple consecutive MMs and the cases where I’ve seen them the manager works hard to help the individual recover when there were legit issues. Of course, I’m sure folks have horror stories where that’s not true and they got screwed. In general it appears to *try* to be fair, though the expectations do tend to be pretty high and people put more pressure one themselves because of the outsized regards for high perf and promo.
