L4/5 PM: Resume Auto-Reject Criteria?

Jan 4 8 Comments

I’m ready to exit the startup world and looking to join a larger, more established sub-FAANG tech company (Stripe, Square, DoorDash, DropBox, etc). When I get more serious about the search I’ll hit my network, but to start I dropped resumes in for roles that seemed like a solid fit. I’m used to getting radio silence, but this time all my apps got rejected very quickly. I’m assuming this is algorithmic, or a recruiting coordinator doing very blunt screening.

Are there particular criteria or keywords that are commonly checked for L4/5 PM apps? Any tips for overcoming this hurdle? #pm #product #productmanager #resume

Nah. They’re just picky or super biased, more specifically whoever their PM hiring manager/PM Recruiting lead is. I literally met recruiters from Stripe at a conference one time and they had me put in a resume right there. Within 30 minutes I got an email telling me nope. Box does the same thing. Ironically, I have no problem getting PM interviews or reach outs from Google, Amazon, Apple, Microsoft, & Meta so I’m not salty about it lol, it’s just like dating.

ATS might be auto-rejecting you. Use tools like job analytics to optimize your resume

Do not just apply to these companies cold on their career site. Find the recruiter or preferably the Hiring Manager on LinkedIn and make your pitch via In-Mail there. The LinkedIn job posting version will often display the person hiring for the gig so you can contact them directly. You may have to pay for Premium to see it though. The other thing to keep in mind is recruiters themselves are hunting talent on LinkedIn so they may already have spotted enough candidates to put into the pipeline by the time you’ve applied. They’ll literally send me the link to apply but interviews with the hiring manager was already booked by that point…

  • Try reviewing/updating your skills section. If you don’t have one on your resume, definitely add one that’s distinctly identifiable
