Thoughts after Amazon vs Google new hire orientation
Hi,
I just moved from Amazon to Google and completed my new hire orientation, and was trying see how I felt after orientation of both the companies.
1/ Both the companies do their best in inculcating in new hires that customers/users comes first. And agility is the next most important thing.
2/ Amazon focuses most of their orientation on its leadership principles. They asked us to do case studies and annotate which LP are relevant to a particular case. It seemed to me at that time, Amazon wants everyone to be a great leader. On the contrary, Google focuses a lot on developer innovation.
3/ Amazon didn't mention anything about how perf reviews work. Google went through the whole process overview, and underscored the theme again that if you are a great developer you will be compensated generously.
4/ Benefits: Presenter- "frugality is our one of the core principles and if you want to be pampered like other companies, Amazon is not the company for you." Also on the first day of Amazon I realized that Amzn doesn't file GC for new hires unless they become SDE2. I was shaken by this but that feeling was overwhelmed by my excitement for new company. Google on the other hands, goes ballistic about how great their benefits are and everyone is super happy about free food.
5/ Amazon just went over their software stack in 3-4 hours. Amazon orientation is only for 1 day. I was quite nervous as I didn't get most of it. It seemed that content was for people who have some industry experience. Google on the other hand has 2 week orientation and goes lot more in detail.
Lastly you get a feeling in Google that company cares for you. We get everyday email about what are they doing about immigration ban. However, amazon doesn't care about its employees. Few months back A employee did suicide attempt and the whole case was suppressed within Amazon.

At Google, you fly out to MTV for a week or two, get to learn about google, enjoy free food snacks and drinks, and ramp up for 6 month.
