currently I am director engineering 20 yoe, team size 50ish.

In call with facebook recruiter she said may be there will be a coding round ( not initial screen) she said manager position as director typcially has team of 400-600 ( really?)
also would there be expection about coding test for google and amazon?

also, what levels should i target may be M2 for facebook, L7 for amazon and L6/7 at google ? need help here.

I am arch. type techical but not hands on coding. i am not in touch with data structures, algos and time/space/bigO. i dont think i can do it or even want to do it. unless there no option. i feel its not needed fot my day to day job. #engineering #software

Is youtube based system design vidoes and some leadership behavior enough? any tips for prep?

  • You should not apply for SWE. Apply for Engineering Manager. Coding won’t be hard. But you need to show some understanding. M2 at FB is a manager of managers. 20 YOE doesn’t tell whether you are qualified for.

I'm late to the party, but likely not coding test if you're targeting anything above an L6 equivalent. I didn't have coding tests for L7 at G and 68 at MSFT, but I did for M1 at FB. (If you're interested in details, look for my huge post about the experience). AFAIK, there isn't coding for M2 at FB. The coding test I did have was pretty easy. For reference, I've got 20 yoe, about 5 years of managing other managers with a team size around 30.

EDIT: I saw in another post than an M2 candidate DID have a coding round that was LC easy/medium, so you may need to brush off the rest if going for M2 at FB.

Do a cost benefit analysis, the amount of effort it takes you to study ds/algo for say 6 months (worst case) vs the tc differnce.
M2 salary is in the 850ish range so compare your current tc and do the math

Amazon would probably be your best bet as they do not ask coding and ask extremely high level system design question for and SDM/EM role. Others may ask you to code and design in addition to leadership interviews
