  • Hey thanks for the reply! Can you share a glimpse of what kind of impact did you do on the team and if possible share any tips to someone about dos and dontโ€™s about how to go about doing things? Will be really helpful to get these things from person of your stature.

    • That is great man! How much did Microsoft try to give you when you decide to leave?

By the time they knew I have already accepted Googleโ€™s offer so didnโ€™t give them any chance to counter-offer with specific numbers. But I think it would be another $100k SSA at best which wouldnโ€™t have changed my mind

They are essentially peanuts up to and including L65, even getting the maximum is still bad compared to other tech companies.

But exceptional people at Microsoft get out-of-band stock grants called SSAs (special stock awards). I got three (total of $150k in 18 months) as level 61

But again, even getting one is exceptional so donโ€™t count on them)

      Cases I've seen:
1 - General SSA because too many people were leaving. Last year a lot of people in different parts of msft got it, managers got informed on the spot, without being involved.
2 - good engineer in a project that leadership is pouring a lot of cash on.
3 - horrible oncall and half of the team left in a month, the remaining ones got an SSA.

  • We donโ€™t call them refreshers at Microsoft. There is a target amount of stock per level. To exceed, have very high business impact and make sure your manager and the rest of your org knows about it.
