This is bs. Same work gets done. What difference does it make where an employee has decided to move. If it was for new employees only, that would still be bs, but at least it's fair play. Don't like it, don't accept it. But for existing employees it's totally unfair.. and cheap
@dhdhdh lol with ur assumption. There is plenty of talent in my home country(india) but oppurtunities are not that great… same thing with many other countries.. google(or any other company) can easily hire 100k + employees in india with in short time. And the salary they pay can be 25% of what we get in us.. so even if they hire 2 people in india instead of 1 in usa, its still big win for company in terms of money
@dhdhdh regarding 10-20% paycut… My friend who lives in cleveland ohio recently purchased big 5bed home for 350k in good location with good school districts. U have to pay anywhere between 5-15x for similar homes in bay area. I think even school fees for private schools is lot cheaper when compared to bay area. So if someone is moving from bay area to cleveland even with 30% paycut, it still makes sense to me
"medical discrimination" — Not everything is a protected class. Yes, look up "protected class". You can legally and legitimately discriminate for a TON of reasons.
Surprised with some of the support for this. You would have to either be crazy or stupid to be for any sort of wage suppression in a highly in demand field.
Anyone who supports lower wages from one of the biggest tech companies in the world is working against their own interests.
2 hour driving distance from the bay isn't remotely the same as thousands of miles away. Timezones matter more imo than location, whether California or Cabo San Lucas. Getting out of sync with teammates/internal or external customers/etc is more problematic. Proximity to an office or other central meeting location also plays a role, especially for last minute in person events.
So working hours by timezones and "drop of the hat" proximity are the only two 'reasons' I can think of to legitimately defend location based pay.

Congrats on having all that money and no one to enjoy it with!
Next is no promotion for remote as well.
Managers + new grads generally will prefer return office. Can’t manage if y’all somewhere far far away
