[INDIA] A start up based out of USA is offering 70LPA for a remote job. I have always worked for Large Companies

Apr 24, 2021 32 Comments

I am yet to get the offer from MSFT INDIA.

Queries :

1 - How do I evaluate the company itself?#tech

2 - What is the job security for such roles?

3 - What are the questions I should the co founders, who sees business side of things?

The role which has been communicated to me will involve C++, rust, low latency systems.

During the intro call with recruiter I was told the company has 4M of funding.

The Investors are those who funded slack, airbnb.

I don't know 70LPA will consist of ESOP or just the cash. There will be a discussion.

I am from a college where no companies used to visit, and people took 1.5 years or 2 years after graduation, to get a job of 3LPA. Some took 3 years to get on their feet.

None of my friends have startups and I don't know much about fundings/rounds/series.

I am Employed at a Hardware company

YOE : 8 YEARS 4 Months
MY current pay is 36( base ) + stocks of 7L per year + 15% variable + 3L joining bonus

I don't think the interview was hard.

They didn't ask coding questions or DSA.

They asked C++ and understood my work.

      I am afraid because

      - I don't know a thing about start-up

      - The interview wasn't hard

      - People from my college had terrible experience at small companies, many small companies took money from them and made them work.

I would suggest to try and gather some info and reviews around that startup with your USA friends

It’s obviously riskier going to a startup. The 70L would be all cash. Options don’t add into the comp since they have nearly zero value at the beginning. The only worthwhile thing for you to do is to negotiate a title, like head of India operations. That way even if the company sinks (depends on burn rate) you will swim to your next opportunity at a higher level. It’s high risk, high reward play.

  • If the company is single digit employees, you should be interested in cash + equity, and they should be transparent about the burn rate.

If 4 M isn't enough to get them to MVP on timelines today, that's risky. If it is, then still risky by less so.

  • Its better to join MS .
Looking at way you are describing your interview process and your interaction with them , it seems they are just looking to offload some work on to you or they are not very serious about their interview process . May be they want person during day time in india (night time in US) to do some fire fighting .
Not sure how you will evaluate, may be ask them about their plan for you ? But they will be seasoned in answering those qn .
Unless they are offering all 70l cash . I will not think abt it .
