Dilemma-Continue contracting as QA or look for full time APM/PM job?

Mar 11 2 Comments

I have 9+ years of experience in QA. I’m making about 11k CAD month as a QA consultant (independent contractor) in Toronto. This is the highest I’ve ever been paid in my career. Although I’m CS engineer, I’m not technically strong/coder because I pursued Manual QA since the beginning of my career. I don’t think I can earn any higher with my skills. My goal is to move to Product Management. I did a PM course at General Assembly for the same. I’m unable to get any interview calls for PM (not even APM). I started applying to US & remote PM jobs as well. All my job applications get rejected with standard response.

I don’t even think I’ll get paid well if I get a full time PM job. Take home salary as a FTE in Canada would be almost half my current earnings. But I’m not happy doing QA job anymore. Is it worth risking well-paying QA job to pursue PM role for lower $

Other: look at other engineer type positions, devops, sre, legit QA (automate testing). You do not need to be a strong coder to get away in these eng positions. Youd be surprised at the lack of understanding of DRY or other basic concepts senior engineers dont do for such jobs
