This is for my wife shes not on blind. She wants to get into data analytics but shes from a non tech background. She did her bachelors in Business with focus on finance from a foreign university (equivalent to State universities here) and unsure of how to get into a data analytics role here. She has 2 years of experience in Australian mortgage industry + banking internship and shes currently doing Google data analytics certification from Coursera and its focusing on sql, tableau, R. Does the certification hold any value? Are there any other better alternatives?

I would suggest to build some portfolio projects and then tailor her resume in a way to portray that she has some data analytics experience, that's how I moved from business intelligence to Data Engineering. Ofcourse, my move was a lot easier, but this worked for me.

  • Sounds like a good start. If she doesn’t get callbacks from data analyst roles she should apply to business analyst roles, specifically ones that look like they’re interested in someone more technical than what they advertised and willing to self teach. Have known several BAs who break into DA roles this way.

  • Analytics roles are pseudo-technical. Just gotta learn SQL well and learn business conversation. If you're a good consultant, you can crack analytics roles easily.

  • One path would be to use the cert to get a role in mortgage / banking that has opportunity to work on data analytics projects.

There are some finance analyst roles that are more data analyst or business analyst-focused that could be a good stepping stone given her background and goals

Afaik, isnt business analyst role more of a technical pm? Gathering requirements and such instead of analysis?

I've seen BA's take on modeling work in direct support of the business that they're assigned to and helping them understand and interpret the results, but may depend on the team/company
