Atlassian Sydney vs Snap LA

Apr 9 14 Comments

recently got offered a swe position at snap. I don’t really want to move to LA but the TC bump is tempting

atlassian tc: 145k aud
+pros
+ get to live in sydney
+ amazing wlb
+ fully remote
cons
- weak ass australian tc

snap tc: $200k usd (125/160/10)
+ total comp is almost double atlassian’s
+ career progression
+ get to work in security org which is what i’m interested in
+ no stock vesting cliff
- have to move to LA
- bad WLB?

in terms of quality of life I consider sydney >>> LA. I feel like I’m selling my soul for the money here but it is tempting…

This is so complicated… do you have family in Aus? Do most of your friends live there? Are there better TC options in Sydney? How important is US TC to you if you live in Sydney? (Yes your vacations are expensive just from the plane ticket lol). LA is ok but I imagine it can’t compare to Aus. US is more central and allows you to do and see more stuff quicker and with more money though. If family is in aus though, you will be super far. If I were you, for me the decision would involve all these other factors, leaving aside TC. You always know that you can get better TC in US.

The e3 visa has never reached its limit ever lol but for stability I still think gc is way to go for long term future in usa. Choice is your.

The plus side moving to LA, it opens door for bigger TC.

LA isnt the best, but it’s still a really fun city for a person their 20s making your income. Amazing food, beautiful people, you can find everything and anything here. But ill let you decide.

Will you regret not trying to live in LA (or another place), assuming you arent American and havent lived there previously? Once you get older and have more responsibilities you wont ever be able to just go live in another continent for a few years.

I’m Making a similar move from Amazon Sydney to Spotify NYC. TC is also pretty much double 150k AUD to 218k usd but don’t forget cost of living will be much higher as well
