Hi Everyone,

I am interested in breaking in Business Intelligence, Data Analytics, and Growth/Marketing Insights Role within Big Tech - and I was wondering if anyone had any advice on technical skills (or even certifications) which I would need to be qualified/competitive for the aforementioned roles. I am also possibly looking for a mentor (will compensate for time) as I grew up in foster care and sometimes feel like I lack the skills and know-how.

I majored in Economics while I was at UC Berkeley and I have 1.2 years experience of Data Analytics Experience at Kaiser and about 7 months of Consulting experience at Deloitte (within Technology and Analytics)

My current skills are SQL (Microsoft SQL Server, PostgresSQL), Tableau, Advanced Excel/PowerPoint, and Basic Knowledge of Python (Took some Udemy courses)

  • Yo! I have a similar situation as you. I was in foster care for a while but ended up back with my fam.

I was at KPMG doing IT audit for a year and a half.

They wouldn’t let me in their data science group so I left to a random company to work on my python and sql skills for like 1 year exactly lol

Now I’m at LinkedIn doing data analytics and I almost tripled my salary from 56k to 150k

I have gone through countless interviews and resume critiques and can help you. I’m not looking to be compensated honestly but that’s up to you

I think it’s good to help out people from similar situations

    Also!

Do a course not to get an interview but to help YOU in understanding whatever it is you’re using

I did a fellowship in data science and analytics because I wanted to learn more about that stuff and it helped me in interviews when I talked about continuous learning and development

I would look into the google data analytics certification and make sure you have a grasp of what they’re teaching. I would also create a GitHub project to showcase you python and analytical skills.

And I’m from Detroit where the public education system is TRASH so I too feel like I missed out on fundamentals that most people got even at this age but don’t let that deter you because the opportunities you received, you’ve earned!

Google London often hire candidates from the consulting industry since there's a lot of them in the area. Agree with the PPs comment about focus. Also note that Google often wants a good few years of working experience (like 3) for data science roles. The candidates I interview who fail is often because they've not had enough real life experience to be able to do well in the interview - there's a focus on business acumen and communication not just technical skills.

Updated the comment now. My point is consulting to data analyst at Google is a common route and you should have no problem getting to interview stage. But you might have better chances by waiting another year.

Got it, I get my question how does Consulting translate to Data Science roles - did you mean Consultants who specialize in analytics? I definitely understand the business acumen/communication, at this point I agree with you I will most likely have to wait 1-2 years before applying but during that time I want to make sure I am building the relevant skills to be a competitive candidate, any input on how to mold myself up for success?

To get into analytics, you seem to have a good background. Econ , SQL and the courses you have done seem good.

I suggest you keep applying through websites and referrals. Target 50 companies, then you will get calls from 5. If you get to interview, you’ll get the hang of things and know what they are looking for. If something good clicks , switch or use this interviewing experience to try FANG. All the best.

Hi, thank you so much for your reply! Is there any chance I could bother you for some really quick feedback on my resume? Totally understandable if you’re unable - regardless I appreciate the advice you gave. I’ll try to increase the volume of applications I submit!

Sure, you can DM me. I can look at it later in the day. FYI - I’m not in analytics but I can give you general feedback .

Tech companies don't care about certificates despite creating them by the truck load. Focus on work experience and projects and specifically the impact that you had on them.

Thank you! I definitely understand that, but do you think there’s any baseline knowledge that I should know otherwise I’d be disqualified for the roles I mentioned?
