Incoming L6 google engineering manager. I have been strongly down leveled compared to my current role. I grew into a non FAANG engineering director level organically by being part of a high growth focus team.

What is the timeline at Google for an L6 to L7 promo?

Sounds harsh but you aren't down leveled.

Your non FAANG experience is not as relevant in dealing with the kind of problems you will deal with at Google. The expectations of a director at Google are very different from other smaller companies.

In terms of timelines, all promotions beyond L5 are not time bound. The typical time might be anywhere from 2 to 5+ years but the most important caveat is that not everyone will get promoted just because they have been in the role for a long time.

Fair enough but if you want faster career growth, I'd suggest to keep looking or join Google now and leave in a few years

Thanks. I am excited about the team I am going to join. Also happy with tc. So will likely spend at least a couple of years here.

Same boat, G recruiter told me come in as high L6 grow into 7, and FB recruiter told me there's no such a thing as "high" L6

A high L6 is practically defined by where in the TC band you are rather than distance to promo.

^this. They don’t make you a L7 if you are a strong L6. It’s a different role. Took me time to understand the difference.
And L8-on is a different ballgame altogether

  • It’s not a down level when your TC grows by 40%. Your previous level is L4.32 based in the TC difference

    • I’m joking. On a more serious note, top tech companies don’t pay engineers high TC just for fun. It’s based on the market as well as the quality of these engineers. In comparison to your previous experience, you are going to manage high performing engineers. The scope of individual engineers is bigger which rolls up to your responsibilities. They are also more demanding on what their manager has to provide for their career. Thus, you can’t compare the 2 roles just by the number of reports

That’s normal. What’s your current company? It’s quite normal that director from non FAANG is downlevel to L6 in FANG

And VPs in startups. And Sr Director in large non-FANG public company with 5000+ employees.
All L6 EMs. All got a TC bump coming over. It’s strange, but nice.
