I am an EM at Twitter, have 15 people and 1 manager reporting to me. 13 years in people management and four years as an IC.

Facebook told me that I qualify only for M1.

What are the requirements for M2 then? Isnโ€™t 17 years of experience, managing managers and teams of 30 people (before Twitter I had larger org) not enough?

P.S. Current TC (with stocks plunging) is roughly $450k

Why don't you ask the recruiter instead of whining on blind?

Tbh it's subjective as fuck. I've seen M2s with one direct report and even Directors with no reports.

I'd still push for M2 unless your desperate to get out of Twitter.

FB isn't top in comp anymore though I'm sure you could get better offers at Google or other companies.

You should be M2 but Facebook likes to downlevel external manager hires. I've seen people who were senior directors and CTOs get hired as M1. But then I've seen someone come from Google as M2 because their Google level was comparable. Coming from Twitter you should be comparable as well.

You should push back on the recruiter and ask for an M2 interview loop. At worst they make you an M1 offer. Play hardball with the recruiter. Everyone is desperate to fill headcount and no one is meeting their hiring targets.

The recruiter told me me this is m1. If I am not interested, they wonโ€™t proceed either

Makes sense. I've seen a lot of churn for M1. People leaving after 1 year or less. I've had a new manager every half and half of those managers have left the company. The ones that stay are all trying to make M2. Probably so that they don't have to deal with the shit of being a line manager.

Maybe they take 13 years management experience and still only a bottom-level manager at Twitter as a red flag?

Good point. Twitter sucks in promoting managers. I am two and a half years here, promoted five people in my team and nobody took care of my promotion. Does not matter how hard I work, my management chain in Twitter does not care.
