I am a huge java fanboy. I used various other tech stacks (since the project required it) but it wasn’t that fun. Apparently java is my big love 😂😂

Since I am still doing my masters I wanted to know if java(especially with spring ecosystem) is still important in today’s landscape or do companies slowly shift away from java?

Is java still a thing at google/meta/… (excluding android ofc)

At Meta it depends. Php for application layer, sure, but most of the infra is C++.

At Google now. We use Java and C++ pretty equally as far as I can tell (with other languages like Go, Python, etc. not too far behind) for distributed systems infrastructure. It's really up to each team to decide. For example, my current team uses a mix of Java, Go, and Kotlin.

When I was at Amazon, it was almost entirely Java (99%, I'd guess) with sprinkles of systems languages (C/C++) for development tools (Kerberos-like things, etc.) and very minimal Kotlin usage.

At either company, you could probably throw a dart blindfolded and hit a team that uses Java in some capacity.

By all means, join a java shop. Let us know how you feel about the one true religion in, say, three years.

Honestly I have mixed feelings about the future of java 😂 there are clearly some tech stacks that are “better”

Ask anyone saying Java is dying how long they have been in the industry. My prediction: 9 out of 10 times, it's a greenhorn. Any experienced developer worth their salt knows that such claims are actually just more hot air than wisdom.

Java is not the new fine dine that opened in the city and is getting rave reviews. Java is the McDonald's. You could be almost anywhere in the world and you know you can go to the nearest McDonalds and have a decent meal.

Java isn't going anywhere in the next 10 years.

I have been doing java for almost 2 decades now. It has evolved, and adopted good ideas from other languages, and listenes to the community needs. Java today is leaps and bounds ahead of what it was back in the day. All this time every few years there's been a new trend for one or the other language that has risen and fallen. Java, meanwhile, has calmly kept up without all the fuss and hype.
