No they connect to your pge account. During hours of higher energy demand they encourage you to reduce your electricity by paying you extra. As a result they act as a virtual power plant that *reduces demand* rather than *adds supply*.

  Yep pge already does this, has about 10 rate options and can text you during peak windows if you want. You are basically paying a middleman to provided you a sleeker ui?

Service is legit, I've used it a couple of years. It is complicated with solar, since the baseline against which reduction is measured doesn't take into account weather, so I've had to opt out when it had been cloudy after a period of sun. That aside, if you pay attention, you can do much better than the standard utility credits.
